The Fiber Optic Multiplexer from Galaxy Scientific allows one spectrometer to automatically switch between measuring ten different sampling devices. This is perfect for the NIR analysis of several different product streams or sampling points.
A rotary steering mechanism is used to switch the output and input fibers of the spectrometer. Repeatable positioning for every channel is guaranteed, within an accuracy of 1 milliradian, by highly precise stepper motors whose motion is controlled by advanced algorithms.
The rotary configuration of the Multiplexer removes the unpredictable optical effects that can occur as a result of pathlength differences in linear systems, providing superior throughput and channel-to-channel wavelength matching. Switching between channels can be achieved in less than 500 ms, making switching between measurements fast.
The Multiplexer can work with 600 mm solid core fiber and regular SMA905 low-OH optical fiber inputs, though larger and smaller core fiber bundles can also be used. The system is configured upon request to have any 2-10 channels, with the ability to add more channels at a later date. The Multiplexer’s small form factor and robust design means it can be placed near to the sample points and at a distance from the spectrometer; protecting the instrument from the sample whilst reducing the need for extensive cabling with expensive fiberoptics.
The system can be remotely controlled via RS-422, RS-485 or USB ports. The system is ran using a basic ASCII protocol that can communicate with third party process control software or Galaxy’s Spectral Sage software. The system’s current operating channel is displayed by means of a blue LED display.
The Multiplex is powered via a standard 24V DC supply that uses a robust locking connector and USB and RS-422/485 input connectors, which are IP65-rated for use in challenging factory environments. The system is housed in powder coated, gasketed aluminum, to protect it from dirt and dust, and sits on sorbethane rubber feet for vibration protection.
These feet can be removed for mounting/installation to different points. In addition, the whole system can be housed within a secondary container for use in hazardous environments.
The Fiber Optic Multiplexer can be used with either the QuasIR 2000E emission or QuasIR 2000 fiber optic FT-NIR spectrometers, providing an economical solution for multiple-point measurement. The system can also be used with other major NIR spectrometers.
