Zeta potential accuracy of suspended colloidal particles depend on knowing the accuracy of the dielectric constant of the liquid. Depending on the particle of interest, a number of different liquids may be used, including mixtures of various proportions of low and high dielectric solvents. As a mixture, the dielectric constant is not typically known.

The BI-870 allows for the dielectric constant determination of the mixture. The BI-870 Dielectric Constant Meter from Brookhaven Instruments allows users to easily measure dielectric constants.

Users simply insert the probe in the liquid to be measured, adjust the two controls on the front panel, and then read the dielectric constant from the display.
