Why CRDS Gas Analyzers are Critical for High Purity Gas

With a long history in industrial gas, medical gas, and chemical processing, the TIGER OPTICS Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) gas analyzers allow for the identification of moisture and other rogue contaminants in process gas streams, including bulk, specialty, reactive, corrosive, and inert gases.

CRDSis a sensitive and accurate analytical technique for detecting and measuring trace gases and sample isotopes. It is a non-destructive method for molecule absorption spectra quantitative measurements.

The CRDSmethod measures the light absorption rate by a gas sample housed in a highly reflective cavity. A laser pulse is delivered into the cavity, and the light bounces back and forth between two highly reflective mirrors at either end.

The gas sample in the cavity absorbs the light as it bounces back and forth, gradually reducing the light’s intensity. The concentration of the gas species in the sample is calculated by measuring the time it takes for the light to decline, or “ring down,” to a predefined threshold level.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) used theTIGER OPTICS HCl analyzer to create its HCl standard andto produce HCl standards via gravimetric preparation.

This method dilutes pure HCl gas with a carrier gas, often nitrogen, to produce a sample with a known HCl concentration. The sample is then sent through a TIGER OPTICS HCl analyzer to confirm its concentration.

NIST used the HCl analyzer to properly quantify the concentration of HCl in the gas mixture, allowing them to prepare the HCl standards accurately. The TIGER OPTICS HCl analyzer's great sensitivity and accuracyensured the standards were of the highest quality, which is critical for precise measurements in various applications.

In another study, NIST researchers assessed the effectiveness of a CRDS apparatus for measuring methane (CH4) in natural gas samples. They discovered that the equipment was extremely accurate and precise, with a measuring uncertainty of less than 0.1 % over a range of concentrations.

How Process Insights is Different from the Competitors

Measurement Principle: The gas analyzers employ CRDS, which analyzes the decay period of light resonating inside an optical cavity filled with the gas being studied. Calibration: The CRDS gas analyzers are factory-calibrated against NIST-traceable standards and are free of long-term drift, eliminating the need for regular field calibrations. Competitors’ gas analyzers require recalibration at regular intervals to compensate for drift.

Specificity: The CRDS analyzers use narrow-linewidth lasers as light sources, making them highly selective to the target analyte and free of typical interferences. The competitors’ gas analyzers frequently require sample conditioning to remove interfering species or additional calibration steps to compensate for their effect on concentration determination.
