The PSA Series of Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzers

Anton Paar’s PSA series features laser diffraction technology that is very helpful for users to determine the particle size and particle size distribution of both dry powders and liquid dispersions from the nanometer up to the millimeter range.

Insights into the material’s particle size and size distribution are necessary for quality control and product development as both these parameters exhibit an effect on the processability as well as the properties of the ultimate product. The instruments of this range boast an experience of over five decades. The world’s first laser diffraction particle size analyzer, the first-ever PSA, was invented in 1967.

PSA 1190

Multi-laser system is available

Measurement range dry: 0.1 to 2500 µm

Measurement range liquid: 0.04 to 2500 µm

PSA 1090

Dual laser system available

Measurement range dry varies from 0.1 to 500 µm

Measurement range liquid varies from 0.04 to 500 µm

PSA 990

Comes with a single laser system

Measurement range dry: 0.3 to 500 µm

Measurement range liquid: 0.2 to 500 µm

Key Features

Compact Two-in-One Design to Measure Both Wet and Dry Samples

The PSA range of instruments comes under the only particle size analyzers that can be equipped with completely combined liquid and dry dispersion modules in a single instrument. Sample dispersion and measurement are performed within the instrument.

This special design avoids the need for the operator to tackle various accessories, perform manual adjustmentsor exchange the hardware. The software allows shifting between liquid and dry dispersion mode with just the click of a mouse, thus saving time and avoiding operation faults.

Multi-Laser Technology for a Broad Measurement Range

The multi-laser technology offers a wide range of quantifiable particle sizes. The single-laser PSA 990 spans a measurement range from 0.2 to 500 μm. For an even wider range, PSA 1090 and PSA 1190 exhibit a special optical design for diffraction analysis, which involves multiple lasers.

While PSA 1090 has been developed with two lasers to resolve particles as small as 40 nm, PSA 1190 includes a third laser to cover the complete measurement range of up to 2.5 mm. The use of solid-state lasers guarantees that instruments of the PSA series are all set to quantify as soon as they are switched on. This is because almost no warm-up time is needed.

Accurate Size Distribution of Dry Powders

In general, it is hard to quantify the size distribution of dry powders since the particles tend to agglomerate, which falsifies the outcomes. Dry Jet Dispersion (DJD) technology is Anton Paar’s patented method (FR2933314) for effectively dispersing and accurately examining powder particles.

The novel design includes an air pressure regulator that rapidly and easily adjusts the air flow according to the sample properties. The shear forces made by the air flow isolate agglomerated particles, which ensures that primary particles are detected.

Accuracy, Repeatabilityand Stability for a Lifetime

Anton Paar’s particle size analyzers are completely compliant with ISO 13320 standard to satisfy the needs of precise, traceableand repeatable outcomes. The special design of the lasers and the optical bench establish the market standard for measurement reproducibility that is over 1 % variation.

Furthermore, the optical bench design consists of all optical components permanently mounted on a cast-iron base plate. This guarantees realignment-free operation, thereby making PSA the perfect instrument not just for R&D environments but also for tough settings. Therefore, stability, reproducibilityand precision are ensured for the entire lifetime of the instruments.
