What System Type is Best for Different Applications—Modular, Semi-Integrated, or Fully Integrated?

The option between a fully integrated, compact Raman system and a flexible, probe-based one depends mostly on which optical coupling technique is perfect for users’ sample or application. Size, sensitivity, and laser control may also be taken into consideration.

A modular Raman system utilizes fibers to route excitation light between spectrometer, probe, and laser. The physically flexible interface is excellent for bringing the Raman system to the sample (in-situ process monitoring, art analysis, and clinical use) or when the spectrometer is unable to reach very close to the sample (extreme surroundings or production line). A fully integrated Raman system integrates the spectrometer, sampling optics, and laser into a single unit, removing fibers that introduce coupling losses and can break. Power supply and communications are also consolidated into one, compact footprint with direct laser power control via drivers or software.A fully integrated system significantly offers higher signal because of the built-in optics, whereas more flexibility is offered by a modular system.
