Memry Corp.

Memry was founded in 1983 in Stamford, Connecticut to develop commercial applications for the emerging shape memory alloy business. Originally focused on a family of copper-based shape memory alloys which were subsequently found to be inferior in performance for long term and demanding applications, the company shifted its focus in the late 80's to the nickel-titanium-based alloys, commonly known today as Nitinol. Memry’s business model in the ‘80’s was to develop proprietary end-user products and seek distribution for them via direct sales and agency relationships. Under new leadership beginning in 1992, the business model was altered to being an OEM supplier of semi-finished materials and engineered components fabricated from shape memory alloys for a wide range of customers serving the industrial, commercial, defense and medical device markets.

In 1996, Memry acquired the intellectual property and manufacturing assets of Raychem Corporation involved with the shape memory business, including its manufacturing operations based in Menlo Park, California. Until the fall of 2000, Raychem marketed and sold all of Memry’s output under the Raychem Tinel trade name, excluding only materials and components for the medical implant market and all company's shipments to United States Surgical Corporation. In the fall of 2000, the original agreements with Raychem (since acquired by Tyco Corporation) were modified regarding the marketing, sale and distribution of the products manufactured by Memry, with Memry becoming the direct provider to the marketplace.
