LGC Standards is a division of LGC Group, the UK’s designated National Measurement Institute for chemical and bioanalytical measurements. Our History

Our origins can be traced back to 1842, when the Laboratory of the Board of Excise was founded to regulate tobacco adulteration. In 1875 the laboratory was appointed 'referee analyst', in landmark legislation specifically designed to protect the consumer. While we have significantly expanded our activities to support the wider analytical science community, to this day LGC hosts the unique function of the Government Chemist, providing expert opinion through independent chemical and bioanalytical measurement.
