Graphmatech is a Swedish materials company that invents, develops and sells novel Graphene-based nanocomposites materials. We are on a mission to deliver truly world-changing graphene hybrid materials that have the potential to make the world a better place.
The history of graphene
When graphene was first isolated in 2004 by two researchers at The University of Manchester, Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Kostya Novoselov, is was a long-awaited breakthrough. The theory of the two-dimensional carbon material had been known since 1947, but despite enormous efforts to grow graphene on other single crystal surfaces nothing thinner than 50 to 100 layers was produced before 2004. Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Kostya Novoselov won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering work in 2010.
Graphene has extraordinary properties – it is both the thinnest and the strongest material ever known and has extremely high thermal and electrical conductivity.
The potential application areas are enormous. However, despite massive resources devoted to graphene research, more than 10 years after the first isolation of graphene we are still waiting for this revolution to happen. As it turns out, graphene is still really difficult to produce in large quantities.
Aros Graphene®
In 2017 a breakthrough was made at the Division of Inorganic Chemistry at Uppsala University, Sweden, when material scientist Dr. Mamoun Taher managed to design and manufacture a graphene hybrid material with cleverly designed microstructure resulting in outstanding properties. This new material has a scalable manufacturing process, displays graphene properties in 3D and is easy to use as an additive or coating – it can even be 3D printed!
Dr. Mamoun Taher named the invention Aros Graphene®inspired from the great innovative environments in Uppsala and Västerås. The Viking names for these two cities were Västra Aros (West Aros) and Östra Aros (East Aros), and hence Aros is the common denominator between the cities.
The result was patented in September 2017. Since then extraordinary results have been achieved when mixed with polymers, metals or used as an additive to batteries always with a focus on solving industrial challenges.
