The LE-05 and LE-15 laser extensometers from Epsilon are high precision. non-contacting instruments developed for strain measurement in materials testing. The self-contained extensometers use advanced laser diode technology. They comprise a high speed laser scanner to determine the spacing between reflective tape strips on the sample.
The LE-05’s measurement range extends from 0.3 to 5in (8 to 127mm), while the LE-15’s measurement range extends from 0.3 to 15in (8 to 381mm). The gauge length can be decided by the user, allowing high elongation measurements whenever shorter gauge lengths are required. In addition, the high resolution enables precise measurements of smaller strains.
The LE-05 and LE-15 laser extensometers are fitted with a digital display. It is possible to connect analog output to existing test controls. The RS-232 serial communications interface offers two way communications, and operations can be conducted locally or remotely.
Unlike most laser extensometers, the scanning beam is always perpendicular to the specimen, which aids in eliminating errors when viewing through windows in chambers.
Additionally, it also reduces sensitivity to the distance between the extensometer and the sample. As the unit measures reflected light, a receiver is not needed behind the sample.
The visible laser light can be easily focused at the specimen, which is provided with small reflective tape strips placed at the desired gauge length.
The extensometer displays the actual measured gauge length. If required, the zero button can offset the output to zero. As the specimen is analyzed, the display will begin reading the elongation directly.
High temperature clip-on reflectors may be utilized as a substitute to tape reflectors. The reflective tape can be used at temperatures up to 150°C. The tapes are re-useable and optionally available. They are rated for use to 425°C (800°F).
