Epsilon MODEL 3910 Extensometers are intended to test asphalt core specimens having a diameter of 4 to 6 inches. They perform strain measurement in accordance with test method requirements prescribed by the U.S. Federal Highways SHRP program.
The Model 3910 is designed for testing tensile strength and dynamic resilient modulus and for creep compliance.
As a single integral, bi-axial unit, the extensometer is capable of measuring both lateral and vertical deformations. It clips onto gage points mounted rapidly, providing much faster and easier mounting than other types.
Two extensometers are generally needed, with one unit attached to each end of the sample. The use of optional gauge length adapters enables them to be changed from the 1 inch centers employed for 4-inch diameter samples to the 1.5 inch centers employed for 6-inch diameter specimens.
The extensometer features magnets at its both ends that snap instantly in place on the steel gage points affixed to the test specimen, providing quick attachment.
This capability is useful in testing of pre-conditioned samples that are cooled or heated by allowing mounting of the unit before the sample temperature changes significantly.
The full-scale measuring range of the standard Model 3910 is 0.5mm. The extensometers are supplied with gage points and optional gluing templates. The addition of optional gauge length adapters can convert the Model 3910 into the Model 3909.
As strain gauge devices, the Model 3910 extensometers are compatible with virtually all electronics intended for strain gauged transducers. They are often coupled to a test machine controller. The signal conditioning electronics for the extensometer are generally integrated to the machine controller or may often be incorporated.
In this case, the extensometer is supplied with the proper connector and wiring for direct plugging into the electronics.
Epsilon provides a range of solutions for systems devoid of the required electronics, enabling coupling of the extensometer output to equipment such as chart recorders and data acquisition boards.
