Dynamic Vapor Sorption with Integrated Video Microscope for the Analysis of Phase Changes

The IGAsorp dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) analyzer designed by Hiden Isochema is currently available with a video microscope for high-resolution in situ image capture between 5 and 350 °C. This option enables the analysis of phase changes in precisely regulated thermal ramp or steady state situations including dehydration-rehydration and deliquescence.

The camera option of the IGAsorp enables concurrent high-resolution image collection with vapor sorption and TGA measurements to 350 °C, and matches with both organic and water vapors. The high-resolution video microscope includes LED illumination, modifiable magnification to 220x and an integral polarizer. An all-new software interface provides full control of the camera from the IGAsorp software with full-color images recorded either at fixed time intervals or at specific stages in the technique.

Real-time image display is combined with the gravimetric data and replay options include time-lapse video presentation mode.

MVTR Cell

Hiden Isochema’s unique Permeation Cell Set allows the examination of water vapor permeation via polymeric films and direct determination of moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) values. The films are clamped into a cell that is capable of containing a saturated salt solution in order to maintain the cell’s inner humidity level. The environment surrounding the cell is set using the IGAsorp during an MVTR measurement with pre-configured humidity conditions across the film. The membrane clamps are pre-sealed to enable the integrity of the seal on the film to be confirmed before the MVTR measurement begins.

HIsorp Software

The user-friendly HIsorp software from Hiden Isochema is completely compatible with all Microsoft Windows operating systems, and comprises of an intuitive user interface and high-resolution graphics. HIsorp uses the exclusive IGA method for real-time kinetic analysis and endpoint prediction, delivering faster and more accurate and reliable isotherm determination than simpler gradient-based approaches.

It also integrates a variety of useful and time-saving features including single-click export to Excel, a PDF report generator, embedded video help, and automated email notification when an experiment has been completed.

Innovative analysis features include enthalpy of adsorption, chemical diffusion coefficient, and sorption rate calculations and surface area analysis. HIsorp also consists of simple user conformance test routines for temperature, weight, and humidity verification.

Technique Hyphenation

It is possible for the IGAsorp models to be interfaced with complementary characterization approaches such as Raman and infrared probes, and a variety of quadrupole mass spectrometers from Hiden Analytical. Vibrational spectroscopy methods are used to acquire further information on the interaction of water vapor with compound samples, while the integration of a mass spectrometer permits a robust combination of vapor sorption and TGA-MS analysis in a single installation.
