该技术基于马里兰大学化学与生物分子工程系、化学与生物化学系 Robert Franklin and Frances Riggs Wright 杰出主席王春生与美国陆军研究实验室 ECS 研究员、ARL 研究员、团队负责人、高级化学家徐康的研究成果。该技术包括一个新型超高能阴极、一个新型硅阳极和一个不易燃的水系电解质。
这些电池可存储更多能量，并且不含过渡金属，从而降低了生产成本。事实证明，这些电池在零下50摄氏度以下也能有效工作，而且水基电解质大大降低了短路时起火的风险。
