Core’s metallurgical laboratories were established in Brisbane in 1981 as the Hydrometallurgical Research Laboratories (HRL), owned by Mt Isa Mines, subsequently acquired by Xstrata.

In 2006 Core acquired HRL from Xstrata, renaming the laboratory to hrltesting. Core and its laboratory are fully independent, and privately owned. Since 2015 the laboratory has traded under the parent group name of Core Group.

Core has continued HRL’s long history of process innovation, continuing to produce and commercialise world class process technologies.
