Automated Systems and System Integration

Tinius Olsen has taken a fresh look at how their customers use materials testing machines and software to meet specific needs in the current commercial environment. Accuracy, data rates, resolution, control, calibration, precise adherence to test standards, measurement of uncertainty and traceability are all essential parameters tuned to the highest standards and capabilities in Tinius Olsen testing machines and software.

Tinius Olsen can configure an automated system to match your exact requirements, saving time and making you money. Each component of the Tinius Olsen’s automated systems is equipped with the following standard features:

Horizon Software: Allow users to manage, control, report and delivering test results in a rapid manner that is provided directly to the necessary process.

Specimen feed and handling: Incorporated into the system to meet the specific needs and volume of each industry. This includes, but is not limited to, separation and classification of spent specimen’s post test.

Bar code reader: This feature records the details of both in batch and test specimen. This information is then passed to the test method, report output and results data base.

Specimen measurement: Width, thickness and depth of notch can be measured, averaged and passed to the test method and reporting output as required by the user.

Pass/Fail alert: The criteria for this alert system is established on each and every result, thereby allowing the user to be made aware of the test’s completion immediately. This allows the user to immediately be aware of whether the material being analyzed meets the necessary criteria to allow for the necessary workers to be notified to correct any issues early on in the process.

Testing Machine: Automates a single testing process or multiple to check either the tensile and hardness properties, tensile and flexural properties, or Charpy and Izod in the a single automated “cell.”

Digital Results Output Package: Delivers the results, graphs and video to the teams that require this information directly to their workstations. This information is then stored for recall and backed up with a suitable traceability containing the system’s compliance during the process.

System Cell: Built to accommodate any testing system; e.g., housing for both a single machine or multiple machines, tensile, compression, flexural, impact, hardness and melt flow. The system cell is impact resistant, transparent and secure, as it is interlocked with both user and service password modes of entry.

System monitoring and alert: Digital and video monitoring of systems is maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During this monitoring period, the system evaluates all movement, measurement, control and performance parameters, all the while updating its log, alerting the user if any errors occur and advising necessary personnel when maintenance is required.

Generating the Required Data

The automated materials testing systems offered by Tinius Olsen are designed to make a significant improvement in the productivity of the applied laboratory purpose. In doing so, these systems exhibit a performance in regards to their manufacturing and processes capability, as well as their ability to instantaneously deliver test to the necessary team members. All results obtained with these systems are reported in accordance with the relevant test standard be it ISO, ASTM, JIS, GB or GOST standard.

The results produced within this system are repeatable, traceable and within the prescribed measurement of uncertainty budget. Additionally, all results are supported by graphs, pictures and video, as appropriate. These pictures can provide useful information on the materials being studied, such as hardness indentations, the identification of an impact break type or a clip present in the same location within the material in which the high resolution tensile strength data is embedded. In conclusion, an output package will also be delivered in an efficient manner to the necessary location, thereby providing the user with a proof of the material’s or component’s overall performance.

Materials and Standards

The investment in an automatic system has a substantial impact on improving the overall productivity of a plant by providing routine repeatable testing on materials, components and devices. Through its proactive input in developing international standards, Tinius Olsen systems are compliant with all relevant ASTM, ISO, JIS, GB standards in an effort to meet both the strategic and compliance needs of any company.
